A Conversation about Connection

An animation that explores the changing connection between the artist and a life-long friend. They reflect upon moments of closeness from childhood and the distance that formed between them as they grew-up, discussing why this 'distancing' may have happened.

This typeface, which is constructed from actual physical interactions between two friends, is used to transcribe a conversation between them. By signifying both language and the physical, this provides a complete representation of the connection between them.

Four zines that each explore the conversation (and so the connection) in a different way.

Biography
Kiri-mae’s work explores ‘human connection’, looking at the ways we interact with one another, and the connections that are formed between us. Kiri-mae uses a life-long friendship to explore this on a personal level, examining how one of her own connections has changed over time, and using animation and text to meaningfully represent this. In ‘A Conversation about Connection’, Kiri-mae has a candid conversation with her friend, reflecting on the close bond that they had in childhood, and the distance that formed between them as they grew up. She uses animation to depict these changes, combining rotoscoped clips of the pair hugging and playing together in childhood, with the conversation that they have in the present. She uses minimalist line drawings to do this, animating each clip slightly differently to reflect upon the different stages of their connection. She also explores the role of language in human connection, constructing a typeface using lines and shapes from the animation frames. These letters, which are derived from actual physical interactions between the pair, are used to transcribe their conversation. By signifying both language and the physical, this provides a complete representation of the particular connection that is being explored. This transcription is presented as a large-scale wall-piece, surrounding the animation from which it was initially constructed. This invites the viewer to step, metaphorically, into the connection, experiencing both the ‘closeness’ and the ‘distance’ that the pair reflect upon. This connection is also explored through the zine form, with four different zines that each approach the text in a different way. Kiri-mae has included a short statement on the back cover of each zine, explaining the process behind the making of each specific zine, and how it links to the connection that is being explored.
